2017 Math+Literacy Summer Institute:
Implementing the Math Diet to Grow Mathematicians
The Math Diet is a research-based, instructional framework to grow proficient mathematicians in grades K-5. In this two-day, professional learning institute, we will explore the five components of the Math Diet and use them to design effective, student-centered math units for rational numbers (fractions, decimals, and percentages).
identify why each component of the Math Diet is important to mathematical learning,
analyze a sample unit based on the Math Diet,
implement the Math Diet to create their own SOL-based, rational numbers unit, and
make-and-take the math tasks and games necessary to teach their unit.
Participants will leave with their ready-to-teach rational numbers unit and the supplemental materials to accompany it as well as the tools and confidence to design additional units using the Math Diet.
