I used to think math was solely based on numbers. Now, I think it involves more reflection and processes.

Before this workshop, I thought math was boring and methodical. Now, I think it can be fun and more interactive!

I believed higher level thinking was just for general education students. But, now I know, with different strategies even struggling students can complete high level thinking tasks.

I used to use drills because I thought they had some value in helping kids memorize basic facts. But I realize now games and goal setting need to replace drills. Thank you!

I used to think I needed to have my students memorize math facts. Now I think its more important that they understand the relationships between numbers first.

My math instruction seemed structured and efficient, but after this workshop, I think that it is restrictive. I need to be more flexible and integrate more games into my instruction.

I just wanted to tell you that we worked on subitizing. We are doing all of the activities we did with you next week as well. The kids LOVE it and they are starting to grasp the concept.. even after 2 days! Thank you again for all of your help this year. I told my principal that your professional development is by far the most beneficial that I have ever been to. It is so relevant, simple, and it WORKS! So I also wanted to say thank you as well, you are AMAZING!

I used to have my students complete practice problems each night for homework to help anchor math concepts. Now I will use games as a very effective way to practice at home.

I used to think my young students couldn’t handle more rigorous problems but now I know they can.

I only had one good way to help with word problems – visualizing. From this workshop, I learned visualizing is used in a variety of ways – subitizing, anchor charts, and conceptual understanding.

Using a personal word wall for math vocabulary is helpful for students to have multiple opportunities with tier 2 and tier 3 words.

I believed asking peers to converse wasn’t always on task and effective. Now I know engaging each child to share their thoughts helps them to be personally accountable.

I think strategies such as quick images and anchor charts would work very well in music too!

I’m always appreciative of events like this that offer ways to incorporate speech and language wrapped up in literacy and numeracy tasks. This event helps me to do that and to feel more like a school team member.

I used to think reading and writing were only for Language Arts. Now I think they are an important and essential part of math instruction.

Read alouds are excellent for bringing literature into math!

I’ve never thought about how literacy strategies can be applied to math understanding. Now it seems logical. But it’s a new connection for me.

I learned that balanced math instruction is similar to balanced reading instruction with some of the same strategies.

This was the BEST training I’ve been a part of.

I love how you all have broken everything down for us to understand.

I thought I’d email you directly and just let you know how helpful your PD session was during pre-week. Thanks for making it very practical and engaging!

I learned that counting tasks and concepts are important to fractions and decimals too. Counting and subitizing activities are critical to all grades. Now I can apply counting activities to improve my students’ multiplication, fraction, and division skills.

Wonderful and practical ideas that can be implemented in my classroom!

I believed asking peers to converse wasn’t always on task and effective. Now I know engaging each child to share their thoughts helps them to be personally accountable.
